(ASQ), the Association for Strategic Planning (ASP), the
International Institute of Business Analysts (IIBA) and is a
partner in The Management Mentors, a group dedicated to
building knowledge in project management, IT management and
leadership/personal development.
Abstract: The days of
the monolithic, complex, multi-year project are over. They are
just too hard to plan, manage and complete within
expectations. The better approach is to break large
initiatives into multiple smaller projects. These smaller
projects are easier to manage and they each have a much better
chance to be successful. Of course, if each project was
managed independently, the entire initiative would be at risk
of losing focus and getting out-of-control. Enter the program.
A program is an organizational structure that is established
to coordinate and guide a large initiative made up of multiple
related projects. The program provides an umbrella structure
over the entire initiative and has the high-level visibility
and continuity to guide all of the underlying projects toward
overall success. In this workshop you will learn practical
approaches to setting up and running programs in your
organization. You will also understand the complexities of
managing programs compared to managing individual projects. |

Team management is an important aspect of project excellence.
As the project managers continue to lead global, virtual and
multi-cultural projects, there is a demand for managing a
workforce that is more diverse than ever. For the first time,
management faces the challenges associated with supervising
four distinct generations in one workplace – Traditionalists,
Baby Boomers, Generation X & Generation Y. Each generation has
distinct views and opinions on authority, work ethic,
communication and incentives. Today, Project Managers need to
build bridges of understanding and collaboration across
multi-generations of workers in order to avoid distrust and
discord within the teams. This presentation will examine the
challenges of leading multi-generational teams at individual
and organizational levels and outline framework for melding
these four different generations into a vibrant workforce. It
will highlight the dynamics of multigenerational teams, the
traits, the defining moments and explore the problems and
opportunities presented. The presentation will also address
the process of engaging and recruiting the future workforce.
Project management excellence can be achieved through
leadership by understanding each generation’s values and
motivations. |

policies for capital program and portfolio management.
Dwight earned a B.S in mechanical engineering from
Mississippi State University and a MBA from Georgia State
University and has extended studies in Engineering
Management from Old Dominion University.
Abstract:
Why do over 95% of industrial
projects end in success of meeting objectives, while well
less than 10% of IT projects meet their objectives at
completion? Part of the answer may be found in Front-end
Loading. Front-end Loading, or FEL, the pre-planning that is
conducted prior to a project becoming a project. This is the
time when the “project” is just an idea or a study and the
cost to impart the scope is low and idea may be investigated
to determine the best fit to support the strategic goals of
the organization. This presentation will examine the
components of FEL and how they are used to grow and mature a
project scope prior to project funding so that project
objectives, budget, schedule, and scope are achieved at
closeout.

Crucial Conversations:
A Primer for Project Managers - Don Gould
Bio:
Don Gould possesses a diverse set of project management
experiences. His early career includes government contracting
and was a key project manager on multimillion dollar worldwide
initiatives including a USMC intelligence analysis and DOD
automated manufacturing systems. Subsequently he gained
expertise with projects delivering Documentum and content
management solutions. In addition he managed a project to
development an executive compensation application for a large
corporation. After a short stent as a BA he took a QA manager
role for a software company providing call center recording
software thus gaining experience in that space.
His more recent experience includes several years
providing project management and quality management for a
large data warehouse and supporting an extensive point of sale
system for a major retailer.
Abstract: The ability to effectively communicate is a key skill a
project manager must develop. From the project charter, scope
development, eliciting requirements, building the WBS and
activities list, acquiring resources to documenting lessons
learned a project manager must be able to effectively
communicate. Leaving this key skill to happenstance increases
the risk in every project. Day to day dialogue typically
happens regularly without incident. The impact of those dialogues, though important, do not
bring with them the risks and angst that crucial conversations
bring. The skills to recognize, intervene and manage a crucial
conversation can be learned.
This presentation will provide an introduction to the concepts
and methods presented in the book Crucial Conversation: Tools
for talking when stakes are high by Kerry Patterson, Joseph
Grenny, Ron McMillan and Al Switzer.
The presentation will include an introduction of the
concepts including an exploration of the definition of a
crucial conversation. The primary ideas used to recognize a
crucial conversation will then be presented in a highlight
form. These include: Background or where the concepts
originated, start with heart or motivations, learn to look or
techniques for recognizing, make it safe or the conditions for
dialogue, master my stories or what we are saying, state my
path, exploring others paths, move to action and putting it
all together.
Examples demonstrating each point will be drawn from a project
management perspective to illustrate how the concepts and
techniques can be used. |

experience in traditional development can adapt their styles
and practices to become effective agile project leaders. Mike
tackles the hidden assumptions behind the PMBOK and explores
agile approaches for managing time, cost, and scope. Taking an

Abstract:
From Arthur Conan Doyle's tales of Sherlock Holmes
and Doctor Watson to the process of crime scene investigation
as brought to us by the television series CSI the need to know
who, what, why and how has attracted and entertained. Nothing
can rivet us to the book or screen like the logical process
that is used to solve very complex cases and provide the
answers that keep us coming back for more. Holmes and Watson
used the power of observation, reasoning and recording while
the CSI case officers are able to support their observations
with a technology toolkit that is able to corroborate the
findings of the team. One thing these two examples have in
common is that every case they work on provides them with the
lessons and historical documentation to fast track case
management. What do case management and project management
have in common? Just about everything. In addition to the
project management process groups of Initiating, Planning,
Executing, Monitoring and Controlling and Closing, all the
components of the knowledge areas apply. Personally and
professionally, observation, reasoning, recording and
technology are the most powerful skills that project
stakeholders can use on an hourly or daily basis. However,
reasoning and observation will not be enough if there is no
one on the team to ensure that the lessons and information
about the project are captured, recorded, and published.
Explore with Sandra to discover if you are Sherlock Holmes or
Gil Grissom. Are you an keen observer who catches even the
smallest of items (Holmes) or a theorist using technology to
reiterate and confirm your findings (Grissom)? Using the
lessons of Sherlock Holmes and CSI, the participants are
exposed to the forensics behind assessing projects in
trouble. As part of the forensics, the participants will be
exposed to techniques to create a team environment where they
can take the necessary steps to promote success. |
